Successfully developing and implementing a safety and environmental system

Client challenge

Our client, Eden Geothermal Ltd (EGL) is a partnership between three partners: Eden Project, EGS Energy Ltd, and Bestec (UK) Ltd, based in the UK. They had secured funding of £9.9m from the European Regional Development Fund, alongside £1.4m from Cornwall Council and £5.5m from institutional investors, to drill a 4.5km deep well at the Eden Project and heat the famous Biomes, greenhouses and offices. The second phase of the project will comprise another 4.5km well plus an electricity plant.

Vysus Group was commissioned to develop a safety and environmental management system (SEMS) aligned with ISO 45001 requirements, that would promote continuous progress towards making safety and environmental protection an integral part of the project’s culture.

How we helped

EGL required the creation of an effective Health, Safety, Environmental and Security Management System (HSES-MS). Using our extensive experience in implementing comprehensive safety and environmental systems, we provided independent health & safety advice and audits during the deep drilling and well testing programme at EGL’s deep geothermal site at the Eden Project.

The project began with a mapping exercise to identify key requirements and factors that would have a direct impact to and by the HSES MS. The requirements included:

  • Stakeholders
    • Who are they and what is the impact?
    • Register of interested parties
  • Brexit
    • Legislative requirements for importing equipment
    • Travel implications for personnel
  • COVID-19
    • Regular changes in Government guidance
    • Site COVID management
  • Contractor Interface
    • HSES-MS bridging arrangements
    • Due diligence
  • Site specific documentation
    • Safety plans
    • Emergency response
  • Environmental impact
    • Carbon management
    • Waste management
  • Regulatory requirements
    • Reporting
    • Demonstration of competence
    • Environmental impact assessments
    • PLANC
  • Future aspirations for the HSES-MS
    • Ensuring the MSES-MS is ISO compliant
  • Risk Management
    • High level project risk register
    • specific procedures to manage operational and occupational risk
  • HSES Communication
    • Internal with work force participation
    • External reporting

Once the mapping exercise was complete, we developed a bespoke project progress tracker and implemented review meetings to ensure effective communication between Vysus and EGL.Open and honest communication was key, not only with EGL but to the Stakeholders we interfaced with on behalf of EGL such as the regulators and contractors.

Our advice ensured that relevant regulatory responsibilities were met, and that health, safety and environmental activities are carried out in accordance with UK requirements for drilling and associated activities on the site.

Powerful results

Our management system helped to reduce the risk to people (including the surrounding community), environment, assets and reputation. The new process was instrumental in delivering a safe, sustainable and legally compliant project.
