This oil and gas refinery was plagued with too many inspection locations that did not really address or quantify the damage mechanisms. The client did not have a strategy document or a guidance document that can be used by client personnel to identify the susceptible locations and place an appropriate number of condition monitoring locations (CMLs).
How we helped
We helped the client by reviewing each damage mechanism that a circuit is susceptible to, then developed a strategy guidance document that directed the user in identifying the susceptible locations and determining the coverage required. The guidance laid out in the strategy document was subsequently used to red-line the inspection drawings. The red-lines included marking locations that no longer required to be inspected, recommending a better inspection technology to be used and also in some cases, added additional locations which needed to be inspected based on the nature of the damage mechanisms.
The deliverable from this project added a great value to plant inspection optimisation. Not only has the plant now optimised radiography and guided wave UT locations, but with the help of this review, plant personnel will be able to identify the damage mechanism and the extent of damage.
Overall Vysus Group optimised the CML locations in the following ways:
1) Reduced the number of radiography locations by 6%
2) Reduced the number of guided wave UT locations by 84%
3) Added CML locations where there was potential for accelerated corrosion
4) Identified appropriate inspection technique in order to quantify the damage mechanism
