Client Challenge

Navigating the complex safety and regulatory landscape of nuclear reactors can be a challenge for even the most established nuclear facility. However, for companies at the forefront of new, innovative technologies, progressing projects can be even more daunting.

A Swedish developer of a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) lead-cooled small modular reactor (SMR) appointed Vysus Group to provide technical safety advisory and support during the concept design phase. Once complete, we will move to supporting the basic design, detail design, and licensing processes.

Despite being smaller than traditional nuclear power stations, with SMRs typically generating around 300 MW of energy compared to 1,500 MW or larger plants, it is still enough energy to power up to half a million homes.

By using liquid lead as a coolant, the reactor is designed to operate at atmospheric pressure, eliminating the risk of high-pressure failures. Lead’s excellent heat transfer and high boiling point improve thermal efficiency and allow for passive safety features, meaning the reactor can cool itself even without active systems. It’s also well-suited for using recycled nuclear fuel, reducing long-term waste.

How we are helping

Drawing on our extensive safety, licensing, and regulatory expertise, Vysus Group’s team of globally recognised nuclear experts is working with the modular reactor designer to help the team mitigate risks during the design phase to secure its license.

Activity includes:

  • Risk-informed decision making during the design phase and licensing of the new design
  • Developing a reactor safety philosophy
  • Nuclear Safety design lead
  • Participation in licensing activities such as producing safety reports, presentations, and active contribution in meetings with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
  • Interpretation of regulations into plant requirements
  • Developing a list of Postulated Initiating Events (PIEs)
  • Managing Phenomena identification Ranking Table (PIRTs) and Master Logic Diagrams (MLDs)
  • Evaluating PIEs (developing Safety Analysis Methodologies and executing analyses)
  • Developing Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) methodology and models
  • Developing a methodology for risk-informed Structures, Systems and Components (SSCs)classification
  • Developing a plan for nuclear waste management and its classification
  • Developing a nuclear decommissioning plan

As the next generation of clean energy technology is based on novel and deep-tech innovations, neither the nuclear industry nor regulatory bodies has practical, hands-on experience with it.

Powerful results

Vysus Group is continuing to support the development of the FOAK small modular reactor. With our support, our client has been able to make significant progress with the development of both the technology and the licensing of the plant to achieve their goal of building Europe's first advanced SMR.
