Career testimonial - Tony Morton

Tony Morton

Global Technical Head of Power Engineering

Melbourne, Australia

1. Can you give us a brief overview of your day-to-day role?

As Technical Head in our Grid and Power Systems team, I'm responsible for technical leadership and development in our electrical engineering analysis business line. This involves undertaking and directing activities that position Vysus Group as internationally recognised experts in the integration of new technologies within traditional large AC power grids. Understanding and meeting the technical challenges with new technologies such as wind turbines, solar PV and batteries, and advanced power electronic inverters is essential to the renewable energy transition and to keeping the lights on in the 21st century.

On a day-to-day level my role includes providing specialist technical advice and assistance to generation developers, equipment suppliers and grid operators, helping to produce and maintain dynamic modelling and automation software, overseeing the technical component of our grid connection studies, and reviewing project deliverables to ensure consistent quality in our advice and documentation.

2. What do you most enjoy about your role and the team you work with?

It is satisfying to know that the work I do in my role is helping to answer the challenges of the massive technology transition in our electricity grids, and I feel honoured to be working with a team of expert engineers who tackle every day the most difficult problems in grid connection and technology integration. We never lack for challenges as the industry works hard to meet worldwide goals for renewable and clean energy development.

3. You regularly present at technical conferences and support local academic institutions – does the breadth of expertise within the team help nurture engineers at the earlier stages of their careers?

Through our involvement with professional institutions such as CIGRE and IEEE we have the opportunity to share important technical developments for the benefit of the industry, and to keep up with new initiatives. Our junior engineers have these new insights and approaches at their fingertips as we incorporate these ideas into our practice. Our involvement with undergraduate teaching and short course offerings at Melbourne's Monash University, where I act as an Adjunct Associate Professor, also helps nurture talent for the future engineering analysis workforce (meeting a crucial industry need) and assists knowledge transfer between our own team and our professional networks.

4. What would you say to anyone thinking about a career with Vysus?

I would first be assuring our youngest generation that a promising professional future awaits them in electrical engineering, and in power system analysis in particular. For those embarking on their engineering careers, be assured that with worldwide demand for the renewable energy engineering workforce at present, Vysus Group offers a real opportunity to make a difference for the future of our electricity grids in the company of global experts.
