Project
Danish offshore exploration well project management.
Results
Well successfully drilled to plan with zero LTI's.
Client background
In 2016 our client was awarded an exploration licence to drill a well in the Danish sector with a commitment to drill and test by April 2020. When the decision was made to drill the well, our client's internal Well Delivery Process and limited international resource meant the well couldn’t be planned and executed in time. Failure to commit to drilling the well before the deadline would result in them losing their licence.
How we helped
Lloyd's Register (LR) provided a fully integrated project management solution to design, plan, execute and abandon the exploration well in 11 months. This included technical support for the well design and drilling operations, wellheads, fluids, cementing, QAQC and HSE. In addition to the technical support LR also delivered logistical and 3rd party contractor support for vessels and helicopters. As an integral partner in this project our dedicated delivery team worked alongside our client as their external drilling department and successfully integrated into their project and delivery teams.
Across the life of the project the scope of services included:
- Wells project management
- Drilling engineering
- Drilling Operations management (onshore and offshore)
- Shore based and logistics management
- Service contracting and invoicing
- Survey and Geoengineering
- QAQC and HSE
Technology
Based on previous experience, LR successfully introduced two new third-party technologies: drilling with casing technology and using a new inhibitive water-based drilling fluid. Drilling with Casing (DwC) technology helped reduce operational risk and provided direct time savings for the client, while the implementation of the water-based mud System with first commercial application prevented the 12 ¼" hole from collapsing.
Powerful results
From the contract award date, LR was on a compressed timeframe of nine months to design and plan the well in an area where this was the first exploration well to be drilled for five years and under the new EU regulations.
LR provided a fully integrated well project management solution, providing the in-depth expertise required to deliver this project to plan and with no lost time incidents.
- Well drilled to plan
- Zero Lost Time Injury's (LTI's)
- Introduced technology; resulting in time savings and reduced operational risk
- First exploration well drilled offshore Denmark in the last five years post legislation change.
